About Us
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul – St. Louis is a community of volunteers dedicated to helping neighbors in need across the region. Guided by compassion and respect for human dignity, Vincentians provide practical assistance and personal support to individuals and families facing financial hardship.
When someone struggles to keep the lights on, pay rent, or put food on the table, Vincentians respond with both immediate help and understanding. Through person-to-person encounters-often called home visits-volunteers listen first, seeking to understand each family’s situation before offering assistance.
This personal approach is what makes the Society of St. Vincent de Paul different. Support is not just transactional; it is rooted in relationships and compassion.
Together with donors, volunteers, and community partners, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul – St. Louis works every day to prevent hardship from becoming homelessness, hunger, or despair-serving neighbors with dignity and hope.
Our Mission
A network of friends, inspired by Gospel values, growing in holiness and building a more just world through personal relationships with and service to people in need.
Our Practice
More than 2,900 volunteers, known as Vincentians, are answering the call to serve, giving over 231,000 hours of their time to uplift Neighbors in Need. Guided by compassion, we meet people where they are-serving anyone who turns to us for help.
Vincentians go beyond assistance-they build relationships. By visiting individuals and families in their homes, they offer not only essentials like shelter, food and utility assistance, but also renewed hope. From thrift store vouchers to support with housing and transportation, every act is personal, every moment meaningful.
Our History
“What do you do besides talk to prove the faith you claim is in you?”
With these words, the idea for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was born. Frédéric Ozanam was a 20-year-old law student at the Sorbonne in the spring of 1833. When confronted by another student about practical applications of his Catholic faith, Ozanam was inspired to found a “conference of charity” to assist the poor.
The group adopted the name “Society of St. Vincent de Paul” in honor of the saint revered for his work among the needy. The Society quickly established a relationship with Sister Rosalie Rendu, a member of the Daughters of Charity, who organized the distribution of aid in one of Paris’s most impoverished neighborhoods. Within a few years, the original group of seven grew to 600, spreading to 15 other cities and towns in France.
Twelve years later, in 1845, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul crossed the ocean and established the very first American conference in St. Louis, Missouri. The first members met at the St. Louis Cathedral Basilica, known locally as the Old Cathedral. St. Louis remains the Society’s U.S. headquarters, home to both the National Council and the local St. Louis Council.
The International Society of St. Vincent de Paul has grown into the world’s largest social assistance organization, with operations in over 140 countries on five continents. More than 800,000 Vincentian volunteers worldwide work to further Blessed Frédéric’s vision to “embrace the whole world in a network of charity.”
The Society is made up of local Conferences, all-volunteer groups rooted in neighborhoods and parishes throughout the region. These Conferences are supported by regional Councils.
Today, the St. Louis Council supports over 114 active Conferences with more than 2,900 trained Vincentian volunteers. Together, they provide more than 200,000 hours of service to 231,657 people in the St. Louis Metropolitan area.
